A unique take on movies from one of cinemas all time greatest fans
Hello movie fans. My name is Seth. I am 34 years old and I live in Chicago. I have been in love with the experience of going to the movies for as far back as I can remember. My mother always took me to see the reissues of the classic Disney films ( my favorite of which is Bambi), and those were wonderful times that we would share. And then Star Wars came along. My brother was born that year, and I will always remember my father holding him as we waited impatiently in the lobby for our chance to see it. Actually, I think I saw it first with my mother and then we went back later with my father and my little brother. But whatever. We saw the dang thing 11 times. Things like that are amongst the fondest memories of my young life. The first time I saw E.T., or The Black Stallion, or Raiders Of the Lost Ark, were life shaping events.
I thought by the age of 10 I had seen the best of it all, but then in the summer of 1983 I took a vacation to California with my mother and brother to visit some distant relatives and I ended up seeing a movie with my cousins featuring a character that my parents were not quite ready for me to see yet. Not that they had anything against this character. In fact, my parents had never missed a movie that featured him. It's just that movies that featured this chap were always crammed with large amounts of sexuality and violence and otherwise adult themes that they weren't quite ready for their 10 year old to see yet. And to make matters even worse, the current film in the series had a title like Octopussy. But when fate intends for something to happen it's going to happen no matter what, and agent 007 felt that it was due time that he and I met. He progammed my cousins to take me to see his latest adventure without my mother's knowledge and I became a new person that day and forever. When I was 14 I received my first real paycheck from my first real job( I spent a whole summer washing school buses inside and out), and after cashing it, rushed over to my neighborhood video store where they were selling VHS tapes and made my first ever purchase with my own earned money, a movie called ( you guessed it ), Octopussy. Then every week after that I would dash over to the same video store and much to my mother's disapproval, would add another James Bond classic to my collection. It wasn't dear old womanizing James that my mother disapproved of actually, it was the whole concept of spending money purchasing movies when they could much more cheaply be rented or seen on t.v. or whatever; a position that she has not stopped hounding me on to this day. Owning 500 some DVDS is something she will never understand the need for. But not to get off track, believe me that my love for movies extends much further than that guy in the British secret service. My favorite genre of film is drama ( especially during the Fall Oscar season ), and I have a great love for old Hollywood musicals ( the new ones like Rent and Moulin Rouge are'nt too shabby either). Though my tastes tend to run toward more serious things I really do love all kinds of movies when they are made well. To be honest, I generally don't have much use for juvenile homor, but two of my favorite movies of 2006 were Nacho Libre and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. And I usually don't even bother with horror films because I think the genre is with very few exceptions, tired, and devoid of original ideas. Am I the only one who notices? But this past summer I did enjoy the Descent. And next year I hope Quentin Tarantino can breath new life into the genre with Grindhouse. But it will take a lot more than even Tarantino to turn me into a horror movie "fan". I hope you'll allow yourself to forgive me for that. I see somewhere around 120 movies a year in the theater. I've been doing that for about 15 years now, and within that time I would merely wait until the end of each year to compile a list of my own top ten favorites, and least favorites, and whatever other small points I could think to sqeeze on a page or two, and then pass this out to friends, family, and co-workers. This is the first time I've actually tried to expand my horizons and put my thoughts on movies out there for the world to see. Hopefully I will not soon find myself labeled as the biggest idiot to ever share his opinion about something. Or another scenario that I guess could either be good or bad would be to open up the friday section of the newspaper one week and see an ad for a movie that I only considered to be mediocre with a blurb saying, "Seth calls it something to see", when what I really said was, "something to see if you want to see something really pathetic", and they just picked out their favorite part of my sentence. But a little risk comes with everything, and I think it's finally time I put myself out there. So, I hope you enjoy the site I have created. I love to talk to other people who love movies, and I will always want to hear from you even if you hate my review. I tend to be a little tougher on movies than a lot of people. I mean to say that I don't overgush and shower every other thing with praise. Like some film critics give 4 star ratings out to around 30 movies a year, and I think that's crazy. If I give 4 stars to something, you can believe I really mean it. And there has'nt been a year yet where I was able to quite fill out my annual top ten list with films I gave that highest rating to. But half a star lower is still a great movie, and I see a lot of those. So anyway, that's enough to say about me for now. I guess you'll be able to form your own opinion about me when you start reading the summaries that I write. Just don't get too mad at me if we disagree. I'm just one guy with an opinion. It is'nt worth beating me up over. At least not with your fists or any other blunt objects. Let's just talk it out like the civilized people that we all are. And just keep making a point to get out there and see movies so that we can prevent the catastrophe of another "box office slump"!
